The public enquiry into the proposed expansion of Stansted airport started yesterday.

Stansted’s owner, BAA, has asked permission to increase passenger numbers from 25 million to 35 million per year. However, Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) believes the plans will increase pollution, noise and inconvenience local people.

Uttlesford District Council rejected the original planning application last year, unanimously backing planning officers’ recommendation against expansion on the grounds of climate change, noise and air pollution on environmental grounds. BAA appealed and the public quiry is expected to last until October.
