A new generation of hi-tech x-ray machines are heading towards major UK airports.

The new screening machines can automatically detect explosives and liquids in hand luggage and are expected to reduce transit times through security.

The Advanced Threat Identification X-ray – aTiX – is part of a £20million scheme to improve security across BAA’s seven UK airports. The machines will eventually replace current x-ray systems at all their airports.

BAA owns and operates seven UK airports: Southampton Airport, Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Edinburgh Airport, Glasgow Airport and Aberdeen Airport.
