The one bag limit for hand luggage introduced in 2006 looks set to be lifted in the New Year.

From 7 January UK airports can apply to the Department of Transport for permission to allow more than one item of cabin baggage per passenger. However, the airport will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient screening to cope with the extra bags. Strict rules will remain in place on the transport of liquids in hand luggage.

Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly, commenting on the announcement, said the one bag limit was intended to be a temporary arrangement.
