Durham Tees Valley airport has announced it is to keep to the one-bag rule although it says it is says it is currently working with the Department for Transport on the measures required to bring in the new arrangements of more than one piece of cabin baggage.

A number of airlines flying from Durham Tees Valley, including Ryanair, have made it clear that they intend to retain the limit of a single item of hand luggage for each passenger.

Durham Tees Valley Managing Director, Hugh Lang, explained “Whilst a number of airports are intending to relax the restrictions with effect from Monday, that is not the case here—and in any case it seems clear that a number of airlines will be sticking to their own limits of one bag per person.

“Each airport is required to agree with the Department for Transport arrangements for moving away from the single bag rule and, together with the other airports in the Peel Group, we are currently working on the appropriate measures, including security arrangements, which need to be in place before the restrictions can be relaxed.

“The Government has indicated that it would like to achieve a move to the new rules at all airports by the end of the May but it is important to stress that the final decision on luggage allowances—including hand luggage—rests with each individual airline.

“At this stage the position at Durham Tees Valley remains that the limit of one item of hand luggage per person will remain in force on all flights. If and when changes can be brought into effect we will, of course, ensure that passengers are fully informed.”
