Aberdeen Airport is urging passengers to check hand luggage restrictions ahead of flying out of the airport this Christmas. Currently, up to 300 items are confiscated every day at Aberdeen as many passengers still remain ignorant of the hand luggage rules. Since November 2006, only liquid containers of up to 100ml, packed in clear, re-sealable plastic bags, have been permitted through airport security search areas. For passengers travelling at Christmas ignorance of the restrictions could mean expensive items, such as gift sets could be removed if they include liquid containers over the 100ml limit. Bottles of spirits and even homemade foods such as jams or chutneys could also be rejected if they exceed the 100ml rule. Other items prohibited from hand luggage including multi-tools and corkscrews. Travellers are also encouraged not to carry Christmas crackers on board their aircraft, or wrap Christmas presents, as they may have to be opened by airport security or customs staff. “If in doubt, passengers should pack liquids in their check-in luggage” said Aberdeen’s managing director, Kevin Brown. “The last thing we want is for our passengers’ festive break to get off to a bad start. The rules can sometimes seem rather ‘Scrooge-like.’ It is vital that anyone travelling over Christmas follows the Government’s rules. “We don’t want our passengers to find themselves having to handover expensive bottles of whisky, aftershave or perfume, so to avoid disappointment these should be stored in your check-in luggage.” Earlier this year, airport operator BAA Scotland – which owns Aberdeen, Edinburgh airport and Glasgow airport – revealed that 700,000 liquids containers had been rejected over a twelve month period because they exceeded the 100ml limit, costing Scottish travellers up to £3.5 million.
