The Belfast Telegraph has reported that a passenger passing through Belfast Airport, on a bmi flight to London Heathrow Airport, boarded without once being asked for ID as he passed through security. The passenger told the newspaper how surprised he was about the lack of security as he passed through the security checks and also the departure gate. Whilst, as a domestic flight, airlines are not compelled to ask for ID it is apparently extremely unusual for this not to happen. It is not a requirement for passengers on UK Domestic flights to show ID, unless the carrier asks specifically for this. This has been agreed by the DFT, however if a passenger is checking a bag into the hold, then the requirement is that the passenger shows valid ID. Therefore the passenger did not have to show his ID travelling with BMI and Belfast City Airport did as they were required to by DFT rulings. On a further note had it been a requirement and no ID checks were made then it would be a fault of the airline/handling agent not Belfast City Airport.

@AirlineAngel, thanks for clarifying this. However, passengers shouldn’t take the DFT’s rules as read and should check their airline’s website for id requirements before flying as requirements do vary between airlines – Ryanair, for instance, insists on a valid passport or National Identity Card for all flights. |
