Birmingham International Airport has released an interim statement on its long-term development plans up to 2030, prior to the publication of its Airport Master Plan. The statement follows extensive consultation on its Draft Master Plan.

A number of revisions include:

  • Revised traffic forecast of 27.2 million passengers per year by 2030 – current figures: 9.2 million passengers in 2006
  • Reduction in the amount of land required for the airport
  • Extension of the main runway – a second runway should not be required prior to 2030
  • A third passenger terminal proposed for 2018
  • Long-term improvements to M42 Junction 6 – no dedicated Junction on the M42 for the Airport, resulting in less land-take
  • New Public Transport Modal Share targets, (including a target of 35% of people reaching the airport via public transport in 2030)

BIA intends to submit the Planning Application to extend the runway before the end of 2007, bringing the possibility of completing the work by 2012, in time for the Olympic Games.

The 400-metre extension to the southern end of the existing runway would dramatically increase the capability and range of services from the Airport, by providing the opportunity for direct flights to the West Coast USA, the Far East and other long-haul destinations.
