Specialist tour operator Omega Holidays, is organising a night search for the Northern Lights from Blackpool International Airport on Tuesday 15th December 2009. Passengers will be flown northwards, over Aberdeen and the Shetland Isles to a point in the North Atlantic between the UK and Icelandic airspace in a three-hour flight. Cabin lights will be dimmed to enable passengers to watch the display; astronomers will guide them through their star studded journey and everyone will have the chance of a window seat at some stage of the journey. The aurora borealis appear when solar wind particles collide with air molecules in the earth’s atmosphere, transferring their energy into light. Displays can vary in intensity – from a glowing curtain of greenish yellow lights, dancing in the distance to a spectacular, multi-coloured fusion stretching across the sky! The sighting of the Northern Lights can never be guaranteed – a clear cloudless night is essential and for the most intense sightings it is important to be away from any artificial light. Sightings not only vary in intensity but in duration too, from just minutes to sometimes hours. The flight lasts approximately three hours, costs £179 and includes free parking; it starts at 8pm with a presentation in Blackpool International’s Departure Lounge.
