Despite calls from environmental groups to curb our carbon emissions, like it or not, air travel is on the increase.

According to figures published by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), UK airports handled 235 million passengers in 2006, an increase of nearly 3 per cent on 2005. The biggest increase of the London airports was Stansted which saw passenger numbers up by 1.7 million.

To help cope with this increase in demand, work starts this week on the £40 million redevelopment of the terminal building at Stansted airport.

Stansted is currently the UK’s third busiest airport handling on average 65,000 passengers every day. With the increase in size of the terminal and the building of a second runway - Stansted will be the first airport in the South East to get a new runway for more than 50 years - passenger numbers are expected to increase from currently 23.8 million passengers a year to 35 million by 2015. BAA’s forecast figures for a two-runway Stansted in 2030 will be 68 million passengers a year.

Environmental issues aside, all this expansion can only be good news for employment and the local economy. The aviation industry directly employed 186,000 people in 2004 and supports more than 520,000 jobs in the UK.

Stansted itself contributes in excess of £400 million a year to the local and regional economy. There are more than 180 businesses within the airport site employing 11,600 people (2005).

Recognising this expansion, a new website has been developed specifically to cater for UK airport jobs. The site: UKAirportJobs.co.uk offers a comprehensive database of airport jobs, searchable by region, airport and job title. Any job with airport connections from duty free shop assistant, cleaner, baggage handler, cabin crew to airport security will be listed.

Ease of use has been at the forefront of the site’s development which will enable both job seekers to search for airport jobs and employers to quickly list their current airport vacancies.
