easyJet has this week announced a new flexible ticket targeted at business travellers – with a similar package to the Manx Gold offering unveiled by Manx2.com over 12 months ago. Noel Hayes, Chairman, Manx2.com “As newcomers to the Island, they have recognised the quality of Manx2.com’s innovative business offering and have launched their own version – although aren’t quite able to match all of the benefits – complimentary lounge access, free ticket changes, online check-in, free baggage, priority boarding and open availability – which we included when we launched Manx Gold with last year.” “At Manx2.com, we pride ourselves on customer service and aim to deliver “above and beyond” our customers’ expectations. When it comes to flying passengers to where they need to be as quickly and efficiently as possible, Manx2.com mean business – offering a service with unrivalled reliability and which puts the needs of Island-based businesses at the core of its operations.” Schedules reach the smaller UK airports that larger airlines are unable to use, giving travellers fast and easy access to terminals and parking as well as a journey with minimum hassle. A wide range of UK routes provide vital business links between the Isle of Man and Blackpool, Gloucester (M5), Leeds Bradford, Belfast and Newcastle. These carefully selected routes and frequent flights also give travellers huge choice and flexibility. Noel Hayes continues, “Our introduction of Manx Gold is just one illustration of our innovative approach – indeed we are delighted to have been shortlisted for this week’s Isle of Man Newspapers’ Awards For Excellence for our innovation over the last year – especially with the way we helped keep the Island flying during the ash cloud disruptions. “We’re always flattered when the big boys follow in our little footsteps and this isn’t the first time one of the larger “lo-cost” airlines has copied the successful Manx2.com model. For some time now Ryanair have aired the possibility of reducing the number of toilets on their planes to allow for more seating and bring down fares – we did that four years ago!” Jet2 has won a High Court injunction against Blackpool Airport, forcing the airport to stay open past 9pm at night. The High Court action was taken by budget airline, Jet2 against the airport after Blackpool Airport executives said that they would cease to provide emergency services and ground staff for late night flights. Prior to the Jet2 court battle win last week the airline was forced to divert its night flights landing after 9pm to other regional airports. Passengers then had to be taken back to Blackpool Airport via coach. Talking about the high court injunction and subsequent win, Jet2 Chief Executive, Philip Meeson, was quoted as saying that Blackpool Airport’s actions were unlawful and that they were thrilled with the outcome. The Airport, when asked, refused to comment. To search for and book Blackpool hotels click on the link. Blackpool Airport is said to be in crisis after staff and management were told they are at risk of redundancy. The airport, that employs 125 staff, held a meeting to announce staff were at risk of losing their jobs; as many as 85 jobs will be lost. What’s more, Jet2 has added to the crisis, as the budget airline announced that they did not see any potential growth for the airline out of Blackpool Airport. It is thought that the airline will pull out of their 10 year contract as the airline has been left with a £1million loss as Blackpool Airport has asked the airline to provide its own handling staff. Jet2 is said to have made substantial losses at the airport as a result of the recession hitting the travel industry so harshly.
A 48-hour strike by UK Border Agency staff could result in some disruption at UK airport border control today and tomorrow, 13 and 14 October. Lin Homer, chief executive, UK Border Agency said: ‘This strike action is fundamentally about the agency’s efforts to modernise its working practices to deliver a more efficient and effective service. ‘As always, our priority is to keep the UK border secure while speeding the travel of legitimate travellers and goods. We expect the vast majority of our facilities and services to remain open for business. ‘We will work hard to keep any possible delays to a minimum and welcome the commitment of those staff working despite the strike action to ensure we check passengers through the controls as quickly as possible.’
The deadline is fast approaching for the ‘ManX2 Factor’ competition to find schoolchildren to deliver the video safety briefings on Manx2.com aircraft. Entrants now have until Friday 15 October to register their interest. The competition, run in partnership with the Department of Education and Children (DEC), is open to all Isle of Man primary school children in years 1 to 6 who can read to a good standard. All auditions will be held at participating primary schools. Three girls and three boys will be selected by each participating school ready for final judging later in October, by representatives from Manx2.com and the DEC. Manx2.com Chairman Noel Hayes said: ‘With the recent introduction of large format video screens on our three Let 410 aircraft it was a perfect opportunity to approach the Department of Education and Children to find Isle of Man children to record the vital safety messages shown before each flight. Passenger safety is always our first priority and we hope that by producing a unique, unusual and entertaining video we will get the full attention of our passengers. We will also be showing Isle of Man Tourism and Manx National Heritage videos which will further help us to fly the Manx flag and carry the Manx message far and wide.†John Gill, Head of Legal and Administrative Services at the DEC, said: “We hope pupils have a lot of fun making their films. The result promises to be a great twist on the standard aircraft safety briefing video and one that will be seen by many thousands of visitors and locals travelling on Manx2 routes.†All children interested in entering should speak to their head teacher. The winners will have their final videos professionally recorded and these safety messages will then be used on approximately 20 flights every day, guaranteeing each winner instant stardom! Manx2.com employs 60 staff and has a fleet of seven aircraft providing up to 30 flights between the Isle of Man and Blackpool airport, Belfast airport, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle airport, Gloucester and Jersey.

In an attempt to stop the Government from further increasing the Air Passenger Duty (APD) this November, ABTA is calling on travellers to write to their MPs.
