The number of passengers using Bristol Airport has hit the six million mark for the first time in the airports’ history.

The figure was achieved in a rolling 12 month period. Although passenger numbers are on the rise, this rise has been achieved with a significant reduction in flights – down by just under 10% in 2007.

In a message on the airport’s website, it cites the current security risks and says it is working closely with the Department of Transport to enable them to open the forecourt to the public in the future.

Air Southwest will now offer its customers a number of dedicated premier parking spaces at Bristol airport.

Its own form of premier Bristol airport parking will be situated directly opposite the Bristol airport terminal building.

Jason Wescott, Head of Sales at Bristol International Airport, said: “Because Air Southwest’s services are popular with business travellers, for whom speed and convenience are particularly important, we have created dedicated spaces for the airline’s passengers in our Premier Car Park, just a short walk from check-in.”

The announcement comes after the airline secured a deal with City Inn to provide discount Bristol airport hotel rooms and discounts for hotel rooms at Manchester airport.

Three self-service check-in kiosks have been introduced at Bristol airport in an attempt to speed up the check-in process.

Passengers travelling on airlines signed up to the system will be able to confirm their details using passport readers built in to the kiosks, bypassing check-in queues. Air France and KLM are among the airlines signed up to the scheme and other airlines expected to follow shortly. Additional kiosks will be added in the coming months.

Passengers with hold luggage can still use the kiosks, but will need to leave their bags at a quick bag drop point.

easyJet has announced it is to maintain the one cabin baggage rule on all its flights despite the relaxation of rules at some of the UK airports.

From Monday 7 January 2008, the one bag restriction will be lifted at 22 of the UK’s airports, however, the existing rule will still apply to many of the UK’s major airports including Belfast airport, Bristol airport, East Midlands airport, Liverpool airport, Luton airport and Gatwick.

To avoid confusion easyJet has taken the decision to maintain its one bag policy (dimensions up to 55×40x20cm with an unlimited weight allowance).

Commenting on the announcement, Andy Harrison, easyJet’s Chief Executive, said: “There is massive scope for customer confusion in an environment where UK airports are adopting different policies. The only way to maintain a simple and standard policy is to maintain our one bag policy.”

“Also some of the major BAA airports are using the relaxation of the one bag rule as a pretext to further increase passenger charges. They increased charges when the restriction was introduced and now they want to increase charges again to remove it! easyJet will continue to resist such attempts and calls on the CAA for its full support.
