Travelling on planes can be tough enough for any individual, but when you have small babies or toddlers in tow, the prospect of flying can be pretty daunting. Suddenly, flying becomes a whole different ball game! However, there are many tips to help parents cope on long journeys.

The first important way to prepare for flying with a baby or toddler is to check with your airline on their policy for seating. Most airlines offer the bulkhead seats at the front of each cabin section that have facilities for your child, however, some airlines will let you pre-book and others work on a first come first serve basis.

Another important rule of thumb is to ensure you leave yourself plenty of time to get to the airport and check in, with allowance for any last minute nappy changes or demands from your toddler. Try to prevent yourself getting in a panic, which will greatly influence the mood of your child.

To help you get to the airport in time, make sure you plan exactly what time you need to leave your house to get to the airport, and aim to be ready at least half an hour, if not an hour before, just in case! Ensure you have checked out your route to the airport so that you don’t get lost, and try to find out if there could be any road works or delays that you would need to take into account.

Keep your stress levels to a minimum by pre-booking your airport parking when travelling with children. Or even better, book yourself a valet meet and greet parking service so that instead of having to find the remote airport car park, you simply drive to the Airport Terminal. All you need to do is unload your luggage (and children!) outside the Terminal and move quickly to check in. On your return, your car will be waiting outside the airport terminal ready for the final journey home.

When checking in, ask if the flight is full. Most airline personnel will do their best to find you a seat next to an empty seat, or block the seat next to you so that you have more room. Try and be ready when the plane is ready for boarding so that you can get on the plane early as the cabin crew will be in a better position to help you.

Overall, the main tip for flying is to ensure you are prepared in advance, and minimise any nasty surprises that could send you into a blind panic!
