Heathrow Express, the fastest way to travel between central London and Heathrow Airport has increased their Armed Forces discount to 50% off.

The HM Forces discount has risen by 16% for adult express class tickets and 10% of these sales will be donated to the Help for Heroes charity.

Richard Robinson, Heathrow Express Managing Director, said: “We have always offered a discount for the Armed Forces to show our support for this country’s service personnel. In the return to work after the summer and in the run up to Christmas, charity giving is often brought to the attention of the public, so we have picked this last quarter of 2010 to make significant enhancements to our assistance for Help for Heroes.

“We have increased the discount to 50% and implemented a 10% donation to Help for Heroes to show our appreciation of the Armed Forces.”

Armed Forces discount cards are available from any Heathrow Express ticket office.

Last year the first Heathrow Travel Product Awards drew more than 23,000 votes with the winning products recognised and promoted in-store.

Malcolm Robertson, communications director at Heathrow, said: “We all have a favourite travel accessory, whether it’s a phone or a bag or simply a good book. Our awards help us better understand what our passengers think will make their journeys better, and we look forward to hearing what they have to say this year.”

In an attempt to stop the Government from further increasing the Air Passenger Duty (APD) this November, ABTA is calling on travellers to write to their MPs.

APD, which currently raises £2 billion for the Government, was introduced in 1994 and has seen several increases since.

Prior to 1 November 2009,

fees were set at Reduced Rates (economy seats)
£10 for European destinations and £40 for all other destinations. Standard Rates (premium seats, including business class only airlines)
were £20 for European destinations and
£80 for all other destinations. On 1 November 2009, four geographical bands were introduced based on the distance from London.

The 2009 APD duty applicable for a single flight was levied at:

  • Band A – flights to Europe £11
  • Band B – flights of up to 4,000 miles £45
  • Band C – flights to the Caribbean £50
  • Band D – flights to Australia and New Zealand £60
  • For Premium seats the charges are double.

A further increase is set to be introduced this November with the fees increasing to:

  • Band A – flights to Europe £12
  • Band B – flights of up to 4,000 miles £60
  • Band C – flights to the Caribbean £75
  • Band D – flights to Australia and New Zealand £85

For Premium seats the charges are double at:

  • Band A – flights to Europe £24
  • Band B – flights of up to 4,000 miles £120
  • Band C – flights to the Caribbean £150
  • Band D – flights to Australia and New Zealand £170

In 2009 the Telegraph launched a campaign to get the APD scrapped. To find out more, and to add your name to their petition click here.

Passengers flying through Heathrow are to be treated to the best bites of Britain including crumpets, pork pies and fish and chips to mark the airport’s first British Food Fortnight.

From the 26th August – 12th September, more than 20 restaurants, bars and cafés across the terminals will be offering some of the nation’s favourite treats and tipples to provide passengers with a quintessential taste of Britain.

To mark the occasion, Gordon Ramsay Plane Food in Terminal 5 is launching a limited edition three-course menu with culinary delights including Beetroot and English goat’s curd with toasted walnuts and pesto followed by Pan-fried sea bream with wild garlic and spring onion mash and tomato dressing.

Other eateries involved in the initiative include Terminal 4’s London themed Dining Street Restaurant, which will offer passengers a range of savoury dishes including Char-grilled Tandoori chicken (served with a free bottle of Kingfisher beer) alongside time-honoured treats such as Jam Roly-Poly Pudding, Kentish Crumble and Eton Mess.

Caviar House & Prunier Seafood Bar (Terminal 1, 3, 4 and 5) and Rhubarb Food Bar (Terminal 3) will also be serving passengers the great British institution of Afternoon Tea, complete with hand-cut sandwiches, warm scones and traditional leaf tea.

For those seeking out beers with taste and provenance, The Harlequin (Terminal 1) will offer Great British pints including Theakston’s Old Peculier, Young’s Waggle Dance and Bishop’s Finger alongside an ale named after and made exclusively for the restaurant.

In a statement on its website, BALPA (the British Airline Pilot’s Association) has confirmed that it has asked to meet the management of Virgin Atlantic today, 24 August, for ‘last ditch’ talks to avoid confrontation between the airline and its pilots.

On its website BALPA states “the dispute is over the way the company is denying pilots their entitlement to a minimum number of rostered days off which are allowed for in an agreement the pilots have with the airline. These 120 rostered days off per year are the equivalent of an office worker’s weekends and bank holidays but without the same predictability.”

Jim McAuslan, General Secretary of BALPA, said: ‘BALPA always does what it can to assist airlines through downturns, as many airlines will testify, and we did this with Virgin during these past difficult years. To now find that the company is breaching an agreement and denying many pilots their entitlement to the equivalent of a weekend off is a real slap in the face and one which we cannot accept.

‘We call on the company to pick up our offer of talks and to find a way through’

United Airlines and Continental Airlines have received unconditional clearance from the European Commission on the airlines’ proposed merger. The Commission noted its investigation found the proposed transaction would not raise any specific concerns in Europe or the trans-Atlantic market.

“We are pleased to have received this clearance from the European Union, a significant market for our combined new company, and we continue to work cooperatively with the U.S. Department of Justice toward an expeditious completion of our merger, which will benefit our customers, our people, our shareholders and the communities we serve,” said Glenn Tilton, UAL Corporation chairman, president and CEO.

“Approval from the European Commission is another important step toward completing our merger with United,” said Jeff Smisek, Continental’s chairman, president and CEO. “The combination of United and Continental brings together the two most complementary networks of any U.S. carriers, with minimal domestic and no international route overlaps. Together we will offer customers unparalleled global access.”

The companies announced their plans for an all-stock merger of equals in May and expect the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Ping pong at HeathrowWhether passengers want to call it table tennis, ping-pong or wiff-waff, they’ll have an opportunity to pick up a bat and play the classic British sport at Heathrow this summer.

A ping-pong table was installed in the departures area of Heathrow’s Terminal 3 on 20 July and is to remain there for a month as part of the airport’s on-going efforts to promote the best of British sport and culture.

The table will be marked ‘Stop and Play’ and bats and balls will be on hand for passengers to join in the fun.

The table is one of 100 to be installed in key locations across the capital, including the London Eye, Tate Britain and the British Library, this summer.

Created by Sing London, the participatory arts organization that produced last year’s Street Pianos Project, Ping! aims to encourage a million more people to take up sport by the time London hosts the Olympics in 2012.

After the four-week period, the table will be donated to a local organisation nominated by the staff at Heathrow.
