Liverpool airport local artworkLiverpool John Lennon Airport in conjunction with the Liverpool Culture Company has officially unveiled its inaugural Community Arts Project.

Phil Redmond, Deputy Chair and Creative Director, Liverpool Culture Company unveiled the artwork of five local artists and 119 schoolchildren from three local schools to guests at a ceremony at JLA.

The different pieces of artwork dotted around the public areas of the terminal include: mosaics from Debbie Ryan, a large image of Halewood by Barry Worrall and artwork from 50 schoolchildren at St Ambrose Primary School in Speke.

At the beginning of the year, the airport worked alongside the Liverpool Culture Company and issued an ‘art call’ to local artists inviting them to display their work at the Airport. As a result of the many applications received, the airport has formed an Art Panel to review all the submissions and make a selection. The work will be on display until the end of the year; however this Project is the start of a rolling programme which will continue to showcase new exhibits throughout next year.

The new collection of local art complements the current display of photography and art displayed in and around the terminal building known as ‘Collection ’08. The Collection offers passengers and visitors something different to look at whilst they’re either waiting to collect family or waiting to fly out.

Despite the global credit crunch, Ryanair has today announced that it is to launch two new routes from Liverpool John Lennon Airport later this year. Services will commence to Paris Beauvais in France and to Turin in Italy for the Winter season onwards.

This latest expansion brings the number of routes at Ryanair’s Liverpool base to 46 and passengers can now access an even wider variety of European destinations from Liverpool.

The Liverpool flights will operate daily to Paris Beauvais starting from the beginning of November, whilst the weekly flight to Turin commences on 20 December.

Almost two years on from the introduction of liquid restrictions in hand luggage at all UK airports, some passengers are still ignoring the rules.

At Liverpool airport, staff are reminding passengers of the restrictions and urging them to think carefully before packing. Recently, Liverpool airport security staff stopped one passenger trying to carry through 13 bottles of liquid totalling more than 2,400ml in their hand luggage – all of which breached security restrictions and were confiscated.

Liquids, which include gels and aerosols, can be carried in individual 100ml containers which fit comfortably in a re-sealable clear bag no larger than 20cm x 20cm. However, Liverpool is advising passengers to put liquids including perfumes and toiletries within their hold luggage.

Liverpool airport 50 millionth passengerToday may be unlucky for some but for one passenger at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (JLA) their luck was in when they triggered celebrations and helped the Airport reach yet another significant milestone.

JLA staff celebrated the 50 millionth passenger to pass through the Airport since it was officially opened back in July 1933, as they were being checked-in on easyJet’s flight to Belfast. To mark the special occasion Airport Management and easyJet staff presented Helen Lace with a flight voucher and a bottle of champagne.

Helen, from Prescott was delighted and said: “I’m flying to Belfast for a reunion with old friends. This is a lovely surprise and I’m amazed that I’m the Airport’s 50 millionth passenger. I’ll be looking to book somewhere hot and sunny with my easyJet flight voucher.”

Over 31 million of the 50 million passengers have used the Airport in the last 10 years. easyJet has carried more than 18 million passengers since commencing services from Liverpool in 1997.

ryanair 20 yearsRyanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, has just celebrated two decades of delivering low fares from Liverpool Airport.

The airline began operations from Liverpool with a route to Dublin in May 1988, and now operates 38 low fare routes from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

More than 2 million passengers will take advantage of Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest Liverpool flights this year, sustaining 2,000 local jobs and generating a tourism spend of over £100m in the Merseyside region.

Speaking of the anniversary, Ryanair’s Bridget Dowling said: “Since 1988, over 9 million passengers in Liverpool have chosen Ryanair’s lowest fares and No.1 punctuality. Passengers prefer Ryanair because only Ryanair guarantees the lowest fares, guarantees no fuel surcharges ever, and delivers savings of more than £30m annually.

Katie Smorthit, Head of Marketing, Peel Airports Group, added: “Ryanair were one of the pioneers of low cost travel and certainly the first to offer such flights from Liverpool. The Airport is unrecognisable from what is was like just 10 years ago let alone 20 years ago and there is no doubt that Ryanair’s decision to make Liverpool one of their key European bases just 3 years ago has helped to further transform the airport in recent years.”

To celebrate 20 years at Liverpool, Ryanair is giving away 100,000 one-way seats for £5, special price tickets are available for booking on www.ryanair.com while Liverpool airport parking can be booked using an online parking price checker by clicking on the link.

The £5 ticket offer ends at midnight on Thursday.
