Durham Tees Valley Airport has had approval granted on their proposed link road by Stockton and Darlington councils.
The £5 million project will link the A67 to the new Southside Business Park, which, the airport believes, will generate £11 million a year to the local economy, as well as creating 3,000 jobs and 400 new homes.
However, many protesters believe that the plans will turn the airport site into more of a housing and industrial estate.
Durham owners, Peel Airport, said in a statement, “The reality is that all smaller airports such as Durham Tees Valley need to find new ways of generating income. If they do not they will not survive.
However, Stockton Mayor has called for an independent inquiry, citing that the plans will have a “detrimental impact” on the area.
