Gatwick has received a boost to its expansion campaign, as newly elected Lord Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, gives is support.
Mr Khan has voiced his support very publically, and has called on the new Prime Minister, Teresa May, to grant permission to Gatwick to build a second runway.
In the short few days that Mrs May has been Britain’s second female PM, she has made several cabinet changes that include key posts being filled by MPs who do not support Heathrow’s bid for a third runway.
Gatwick is the UK’s second largest airport, and the World’s busiest single runway airport. It’s invested in its service, infrastructure and facilities reaching into billions, and this week, the airport again announced a further £200 million towards improvements to its terminal facilities.
Since the UK is putting much of its efforts into the shock Brexit result, many aviation officials and industry heads fear the Government’s decision over airport expansion will be further delayed, having already been postponed from the end of last year and this summer.
