Drivers dropping off or picking up passengers at Luton Airport need to be aware of a new £80 penalty charge introduced to prevent drivers stopping their vehicles on the approach roads, roundabout or the bus lane leading up to the airport terminal.

The penalty, which was introduced on 23 August 2010, is designed to protect the safety of passengers and other road users plus reduce traffic congestion and disruption.

CCTV is in operation and will used to strictly enforce the penalty charge, which will be reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days.

Drivers dropping off or picking up passengers have two options:

  • to use the drop-off zone outside the terminal at a charge of £1 for 10 minutes,
  • or park in the mid-term car park for upto one hour for free – the mid-term car park is situated a five-minute bus journey from the terminal. Buses are free and operate every 15 minutes.

How does the airport justify charging £1 for dropping off their customers who are then going to purchase meals and drinks.
They also charge £1 for hiring a trolley for 10 minutes.
This is sheer greed

This is yet another act of total stupidity by Luton Airport. Most people are not objecting to the £1 drop off charge – although that in itself is yet another case of the Airport takiing every opportunity to fleece the fyling public: drop off charge, trolley charge, plastic bag charge, fast track security etc. etc.
The real problem is that vehicle access to the terminal is diabolical and has been made worse by the Airports most recent ‘upgrades’ Five lanes of traffic now merge at the roundabout prior to the tunnel. Then most of this traffic has to go round the roundabout just outside the terminal building. Which lunatic thought this up!
A large number of people – yes, including myself get dropped off at Luton regularly and with just hand luggage I ‘bail out’ at the roundabout
- technically illegal but as the traffic is always at a stop what is the problem. My driver can then get off without helping to make the congestion even worse.
Total insanity from the Airport operators – they are slowley driving both the airlines and the customers away – is this really what they want?

I’ve just been hit with this charge for the 8th Sept. Didn’t know anything about the new rules (why didn’t Monarch warn its passengers?) or the new layout. Travelled 45 miles in under an hour then came to a dead halt. This was about 0430 on a weekday morning. Took about an hour-and-a-quarter for the last mile. Passenger (by now late) leapt out near the short-term car park. Must have been stopped for less than 10 secs after being at a halt for about an hour. Got a fine. Appealed against it. No reply from APCOA. Have just found out they are about 28 days behind with appeals, even though the system had only been in operation for a couple of weeks!

This system is an horrible example of bad design. It’s only merit must be for raising money (for the Airport or APCOA?)
On the downside, it has put me off ever using the airport again.

Yes, we have just got done for stopping at the Luton Airport roundabout for about 15 seconds at 6am when my wife dropped me off. We had no idea this was prohibited as we were not disrupting traffic. At 6am there was none. What a loony bit of legislation. We have no intention of paying. Not even going to bother to appeal. Hopefully the magistrate will see the sheer meanness of this sort of thing.
