London Stansted airport has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in light of its successful reducing, managing and reporting of its carbon emissions. The airport’s energy consumption was reduced by 3% in the 12 months between 2008 and 2009.

A number of green initiatives have been undertaken by the airport, including, as part of its £50m terminal extension, a biomass boiler and energy efficient lighting across its airfield. The airport is also trialling single-engine taxing when manoeuvring the aircraft.

Dr Andy Jefferson, Stansted’s Head of Health, Safety and Environment, said: “Around 92% of emissions from our buildings are generated by electricity use, so we have set a challenging target to reduce 2010 levels by 5 percent compared with 2009.”
